How to stop third-party apps from scanning your Gmail inbox

Early last week it was reported that although Google is keeping the security of all the emails on its widely used platform, robust, third-party app makers may still have access to them. The report from the Wall Street Journal said that Google still allows hundreds of software makers to scan through your Gmail inboxes and target advertisements and recommendations based on your personal information. As it turns out, there is a way to keep all those third-party app makers at bay. You can simply do it within a few steps. Here’s how. http://bit.ly/2Y5C15h

OnePlus TV reportedly launching soon in India

OnePlus announced that the company is foraying into the smart TV business back in September 2018 and there has been little information about the TV since. A new leak about the TV comes from leakster Ishan Agarwal. He tweets, “Have some good news for you all: The OnePlus TV is not very far away, at least according to one source. The launch might be soon, so stay tuned. I have very high expectations from it, what about you?” We suggest you take this information with a grain of salt as CEO Pete Lau said that OnePlus might launch TVs in 2020, and just like OnePlus smartphones, they are claimed to be flagship killers. “India will be one of the first markets to get the OnePlus TV. It will be available through Amazon. We haven’t set a deadline as yet, as we want it to be the best there is,” The Economic Times quoted Lau as saying in May 2019. Lau said the company wants to get the software up to the standards where it can create a differentiated experience.

Just like the Oxygen OS is a distinguishing factor for OnePlus smartphones, it looks like the company is looking to make the TV experience unique as well. There is almost nothing known about the specs of the OnePlus TV but it looks like it will aim to make an impact in the budget segment in India, just like the original OnePlus smartphone. Xiaomi has distinguished its TVs in India with the PatchWall OS and the company is continuously working on improving the user experience, so this is one area where OnePlus will have to bring distinguishing features.

OnePlus launched its first flagship of 2019, the OnePlus 7 and the OnePlus 7 Pro in May 2019. While the OnePlus 7 is a more powerful version of the OnePlus 6T, the OnePlus 7 Pro brings several company-first features. The Pro variant has a 6.67-inch fluid AMOLED display with a QHD+ resolution. The display is rated A+ by DisplayMate, and sports a pixel density of 516 ppi, is HDR10+ certified and has a 90 Hz refresh rate.

The OnePlus 7 Pro is powered by the Snapdragon 855 SoC and comes with up to 12GB RAM and 256GB of storage. It sports a triple-rear camera setup with a 48MP Sony IMX 586 primary sensor, an 8MP telephoto lens that offers 3X zoom and also a 16MP ultra-wide lens. The 8MP sensor is paired with an f/2.4 aperture lens and gets OIS while the 16MP ultra-wide lens is coupled with an f/2.2 aperture lens with a 117-degree field of view. The phone has stereo speakers, an improved in-display fingerprint sensor and is backed by a 4,000mAh battery.

Xiaomi wont launch any new Mi Max, Mi Note phones in 2019

If you are looking forward to a new Mi Max or Mi Note phone in 2019, we say don’t hold your breath. Xiaomi co-founder and CEO Lei Jun has taken to Chinese social networking website Weibo and said that the company doesn’t have plans to launch a new Mi Max and Mi Note smartphone this year. He didn’t outright say that the series is no longer going to be made. If the smartphones aren’t going to see a release in 2019, then it is likely that we won't see further entries in the series going forward. Xiaomi has quite a portfolio of smartphones in the market under the Redmi sub-brand, Mi MIX series, and the recently announced CC series of smartphones.

The Mi Max series of smartphones focused on giving user s a large screen experience offering devices with larger than 6-inch screen sizes in an era when 6-inch smartphones were considered quite big. The Mi Max 3 had a 6.9-inch device putting it very close to tablet territory.

If you are one using a Xiaomi phone, then fret not. There is good news for you. Xiaomi has unveiled a list of 11 smartphones that will support Android Q Beta. Nine of the smartphones are scheduled to receive the update in Q4, 2019, while two are set to receive it in Q1, 2020. The company made the announcement on its official MIUI forums. You can read more about the phones receiving the Android Q Beta here.

While people puzzle over WeWork, niche co-working spaces continue gaining traction

This week, a young, New York-based startup called Alma raised $8 million in funding to expand its “co-practicing community of therapists, coaches, and wellness professionals,” a community launched from the company’s first space, a building on Madison Avenue.

As CNN was first to report, the company is charging charging psychiatrists, psychologists, clinical social workers and acupuncturists $165 per month to become Alma members, which comes with services like billing and scheduling and even a matchmaking service that purports to connect professionals with patients. They also pay an hourly rate to book identically outfitted rooms that can be used interchangeably.

CNN called the company a WeWork for therapists, but Alma and its venture backers are hardly alone in seeing promise in more specialized co-working spaces, which have proliferated as their best-known predecessor in the co-working craze, WeWork, has itself set up all over the globe. According to one estimate, the number of global coworking spaces, thought to be around 14,000 in 2017, is expected to reach 30,000 by 2022.

Among the best known of these newer outfits and backed early on by WeWork itself, is The Wing, a nearly three-year-old startup that describes itself as a members-only community full of work and community spaces designed for women. (It dropped its practice of not admitting men as members or guests after a Washington, D.C. man brought a gender-discrimination lawsuit against the firm that sought damages of up to $12 million.) Though the outfit has critics who worry that it advances certain women only — those who can afford to pay a few hundred dollars per month for a membership — investors have already given it nearly $120 million in funding.

They’re betting that women want to work and share ideas and see powerful female speakers alongside other women who are members. But investors and entrepreneurs are betting on broader trends, too. For one thing, it’s clear that commercial real estate owners need new ways to occupy underutilized space as our lives move increasingly online. More and more people are also becoming freelance workers, a trend that shows no signs of stopping. According to the Freelancers Union, 3.7 million more people started freelancing between 2014 and 2018 for an estimated total of 56.7 million America freelancers. That’s a huge segment of the working population.

Perhaps it’s no wonder that Spacious, a three-year-old, New York-based company that turns restaurants into co-working spaces during the afternoon, is backed by some of the best investors in the business, including Baseline Ventures. (Other companies taking advantage of underused space include Breather and Flexe.)

It’s also not surprising that more founders are building out spaces for specific groups of people. Therapists is just the newest that we’ve heard, but there are plenty of others. L.A. alone is home to numerous specialized co-working spaces, and the city’s Los Angeles Magazine recently pointed out. Among them is Glitch City, a 24-hour co-working space near Culver City that caters to indie game developers; The Hatchery Press, for writers; and Paragon Spaces, for those working in the cannabis industry.

Elsewhere, it’s possible to find with co-working spaces for people in the construction industry, and spaces for tech companies with on-demand workforces, and spaces for people committed to a zero-waste lifestyle.

It’s probably too early to say whether the spaces are any more sticky than more general co-working spaces like the fashionable workspaces that WeWork offers. Having been part of a long-standing, not-for-profit writers’ collective in San Francisco for roughly a decade — and knowing that many of my former office mates continue to be a part of that community — this editor suspects so.

Still, the much bigger question — for WeWork and these many smaller, more focused startups — is whether enough people can justify the cost of working in their spaces when the economy invariably hits the skids. It’s easier to imagine this happening with communities of doctors or other professionals who, by sheer dint of working together, can defray their costs and generate more business for themselves.

For the rest, only time will tell. But VCs have a lot of money to put to work, and plenty of them are willing to gamble that right now, at least, are no limits on where the trend can go.

Samsung Galaxy A90 could be the companys most affordable 5G smartphone: Report

Samsung has plans to make 5G more affordable. While only the top-end Galaxy S10 now has a 5G variant and another 5G variant of the upcoming Galaxy Note 10 is in the works, Galaxy Club reported Samsung is allegedly working on a mid-range 5G smartphone. As a result, this third 5G device from Samsung might be a lot more affordable than the other two.

Dubbed the Galaxy A90 with model number SM-A908N, Samsung is reportedly testing the smartphone in a 5G network. The phone will launch in Samsung’s home country South Korea later this year, according to the report.

The report also states the Galaxy A90 will feature at least two cameras on the back. A 32MP primary camera and an 8MP secondary camera, possibly a wide-angle lens. There could also be a third sensor, although the report claims it’s unknown whether that will be housed in a pop-up module. There was a rumour previously that the Galaxy A90 will house a pop-up camera.

While all this information is pretty exhaustive, Samsung is yet to confirm any of it. However, if this is indeed true, the Galaxy A90 could be Samsung’s most affordable 5G smartphone. The Galaxy S10 5G presently sells for an exorbitantly high price range of $1299 for the 256GB variant while the 512GB variant goes all the way up to $1399.
