Gillmor Gang: Unsuppressed

Not just the future of civilization is up for grabs this November. In this age of mobile social computing, we’re figuring out how to vote, entertain, teach, learn, and commit to meaningful change. Thanks to the pandemic emergency, our plans for transforming our country and planet are subject to immediate recall.

Much of the current political dynamic is expressed through the lense of “how much change can we afford to make?” The swing states in the race for the electoral college are those most profoundly affected by the transition from fossil fuel to renewable energy. The choice: how many jobs will we lose by shifting away from oil and gas to wind and solar. Workers in Pennsylvania, Ohio, Texas, and Michigan are fearful of losing their livelihood to a future of retraining and disruption.

Regardless of where we sit along the left/right spectrum, we share the increasing understanding that government doesn’t work. Running for office is a gauntlet of fundraising and promises you can’t keep; legislating is a lobbyist playground where special interests are neither special nor in our interests. The courts are overwhelmed by political power plays timed to inflame and suppress voting turnout. It’s no wonder that the common reaction to this week’s final presidential debate was relief that the campaign is almost over.

The most important fix to the body politic is the mute button. For a brief moment in the debate, we got to experience a few seconds of not talking. Time seemed to stand still, as if we were being handed down a digital tablet of things to not do: don’t interrupt, don’t disrespect, don’t mock, don’t waste our time. Above all, don’t forget the people we’ve lost to the virus. Remember the days when our biggest problems were what show to watch, what music to play, what jokes to tell. It’s amazing what you can hear when the agenda is turned back to ourselves.

In that moment, you can hear things that smooth the soul. In that moment, you can hear the words leaders will have to speak to get our vote next time. I feel much better about the next election no matter how this one turns out. The explosive numbers of early voting tell us a lot about how this will go. The genie is out of the bottle and people are beginning to connect the dots. If the vote is suppressed, it only makes us try harder.

Mobility is about a return to value, to roots, to resilience. Working from home is a big step toward living from everywhere. AR stands for accelerated reality, VR for valued reality. If we want to know what social is good for, switch on the mute button and listen to what you’ve lost. If you can mute the sound, you can unmute it and find your voice.

At first, the mute button was a defensive move. It counteracted the business model of the cable news networks, the repetitive time-filling of partisan perspective mixed with not listening to the grievances of the other side. The hardest thing I’ve had to do is be open to the truth emanating from the least likely location. We are taught to attack our opponent’s weaknesses; a better strategy might be to respect their strengths and adopt them as your own. Don’t worry, though. You probably won’t find too much there to reflect.

Once you experience the mute button envelope, you can hear it even if it’s not there. The rules of the revised debate were that the first two minutes of each candidate’s response used the mute button, then the old rules returned. Even then, the experience of using the mute button informed the rest of the debate. Particularly noticeable was Joe Biden’s response to a series of back and forths when the moderator asked if he had any further response. “… … … No.”

There have been other mute buttons in history. The 18 and a half minute gap spoke loudly when Rose Mary Woods erased a crucial Watergate tape. Before that, we assumed there might be a smoking gun. After that, we knew there might be others, too. Throughout the campaign, we could learn more about what was really going on by listening for the moments when key questions were left unanswered, ducked, or bounced back to the opponent like some Pee Wee Herman playground retort.

Soon we’ll know the answer to the important question: how do we confront the virus? I vote for listening to the science, wearing a mask, socially distancing both off and online, rapid testing, and contact tracing. And the candidates who agree.

FAU-G teaser gives players a better look at the upcoming game

Over a month after announcing FAU-G (Fearless And United Guards), n-Core games have finally released a teaser for its upcoming game. The teaser seems to be mostly pre-rendered, so it can be difficult to know just what will make it to actual gameplay. However, what it does seem to focus on is the Galwan valley, so it most likely will be based on the clashes that happened between Indian and Chinese forces earlier this year.

Good always triumphs over evil, the light will always conquer the darkness. May victory bless Fearless And United Guards, our FAU-G. Launching in November 2020! Happy #Dussehra@akshaykumar @BharatKeVeer @vishalgondal #AtmanirbharBharat #FAUG pic.twitter.com/dZJgiVTxeT

— nCORE Games (@nCore_games) October 25, 2020

One of the interesting things to note in the trailer is that there doesn’t seem to be any firearms in the game. No character in the teaser seems to be using any guns, instead, there seems to be a focus on melee-based combat with soldiers resorting to clubs and hand-to-hand combat. There seems to be a focus on team-based action as towards the end we see five soldiers standing together. Not quite sure if FAU-G will allow for cooperative or competitive multiplayer. However, the game won't feature a battle royale mode like PUBG Mobile. The founder of n-Core Games, Vishal Gondal has stated that the game will not feature a battle royale mode, at least not at launch and will instead focus on the clash at Galwan Valley.

The teaser also notes that there is no set launch date for the game yet and is still in the ‘coming soon’ stage. However, the company has promised a tentative launch sometime next month. So players won't have to wait too long to get their hands on the game. They are also advised against downloading any fake apps that have populated the Google Play Store since the game's announcement.

PS5 DualSense controller can be used to play Xbox games on Android via xCloud

We’ve all been waiting with bated breath for some hands-on information about the PS5, and it looks like that day isn't far. International media has started receiving PS5 review units on October 23. So, we can expect content around the console to trickle out starting this week all the way up to the launch of the console. However, it looks like YouTuber, Austin Evans, got a retail unit of the PS5 DualSense controller and decided to have fun with it. You can check out everything he did with the controller in the video below.

One of the key things to note is that the PS5 DualSense controller is not compatible with the PS4. It does get recognized as a controller. But don't expect to game using it. Austin even plugs it into an Xbox Series X, but as expected, nothing happens.

What’s interesting is that he pairs the controller with an Android device and uses it as a Bluetooth controller, confirming that the DualSense will in fact work with your smartphone as a Bluetooth controller. He then goes on to play Forza, an Xbox game on his Android device via xCloud, Microsoft’s game streaming service.

While one can do this using a PS4 controller, what was interesting is to see how the new controller performs. Of course, its haptic feedback features were not active as those need to be implemented by the developer. However, we doubt they’ll be implemented for use with xCloud games.

He also compares the size of the PS5 DualSense controller with the PS4 DualShock controller and an Xbox controller. While the PS5 controller is definitely chunkier than its predecessor, it looks to be more in line with the design of the Xbox controller, which isn't a bad thing. The trigger of the DualSense also seems to have a bit more tension.

You can check out details of the India price of the PS5 here and the price and release date of the Series X here.

Both the phones make the Nord lineup more affordable and have been tipped to launch on October 26, however, there’s no official word on it yet. Given the OnePlus’ penchant for starting the hype-train well in advance, it does come as a surprise that there’s no official teaser of the launch yet.

Nevertheless, courtesy of the various leaks and rumours that have been circulating online since the last few weeks, it's likely that the Nord N10 and Nord N100 will launch in Europe and the US. Both the phones in the OnePlus Nord range are expected to launch at 12 PM GMT (5:30 PM IST) and here’s everything we know about them.

OnePlus Nord N100 leaked specifications

The OnePlus Nord N100 could be the most affordable OnePlus phone in a long time, as per the latest rumours. The phone is expected to retail starting at around EUR 199 for the base variant and could be available to purchase from November 10, according to the tipster Ishan Agarwal.

It is expected to come with a triple camera setup on the back that likely consists of a primary 13MP camera, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor. On the front, there could be an 8MP selfie camera housed in a notch cutout. The N100 could come equipped with a 5,000mAh battery and OxygenOS to boot.

The Nord N10 is expected to feature a 6.49-inch Full HD+ display that supports a 90Hz high refresh rate. Since it is expected to be an affordable phone, the phone may likely end up using an LCD panel. It is also expected to have a 3.5 mm audio jack.

OnePlus Nord N10 could be powered by the Qualcomm Snapdragon 690 5G processor with an octa-core CPU and is expected to be paired with 6GB RAM and 128GB storage. It is expected to run on OxygenOS out-of-the-box.

The N10 leak indicates that it has a quad-camera setup on the back that consists of a primary 64MP camera, making it the first OnePlus phone to come with that sensor. The secondary camera is touted to be an 8MP ultra-wide-angle camera, a 2MP macro camera and a 2MP depth sensor.

The Nord N10 could come equipped with a 4,300mAh battery that may or may not support fast charging.
