Facebook may soon launch a TV streaming device under the Portal brand: Report

It looks like we have got new information about Facebook’s plan to enter the TV streaming sphere. According to a report by Variety, the device will be a ‘Portal’ branded device and will work in a manner similar to Amazon’s Fire TV Stick, but will offer a number of extra features by way of a camera and far-field microphones.

As per the report, the device’s camera and microphones will be used for video chatting, and may even offer a form of augmented reality. The device is tipped to run Android, which is also used by Facebook’s Oculus Go and Oculus Quest devices. Further, the report notes that this will also make it easier to work with content providers who already have developed Android-based apps for Amazon and Google.

Facebook is already tipped to be in talks with streaming services such as Disney, Hulu and Netflix to integrate their services into the new device. However, Variety’s sources note that the new TV device will have a bigger focus on content consumption as compared to existing devices.

Facebook launched two Portal devices last year, namely the Portal and Portal+. The standard Portal packs a 10-inch display with a resolution of 1280 x 800 pixels, while the Portal+ features a 15-inch display with a resolution of 1920 x 1080 pixels. The devices also come with Amazon’s Alexa and feature a Smart Camera and Smart Sound technology. The Smart Camera is able to follow actions and is able to automatically pans and zooms into the subject. The Smart Sound tech is said to minimise background noise and enhance that of the person speaking. Both devices have not net launched in India.

Google Pixel 4 to have promising astrophotography capabilites

Just yesterday, the team at XDA Developers gave us the first look at the various camera features that would be a part of the Google Pixel 4. This, they achieved this by updating their Google Pixel 3 to Android 10.0, and then tearing down the Camera app’s apk to see what all features were going to be found on the company’s upcoming phone. One of the features listed was an improved Night Sight mode.

Now the team at XDA has gone further and shared that the Pixel 4 could have some very impressive astrophotography capabilities, especially for a phone. Using the modded APK for Google Camera 7.0, the team was able to take incredibly impressive photos of the night sky. This, the team says, was possible thanks to improved algorithms for Night Sight, which also includes better tripod detection. The current Google Camera app is able to take exposures up to 5 seconds only, while the new version of the app will be able to go up to 15 seconds (or even higher). The team conducted the test on the Google Pixel 3XL using the existing Google Camera app and the modded one.

Google’s Pixel smartphones have always been at the forefront of smartphone computation photography, since their introduction back in 2016. Last year, Google amazed audiences all over the world with what the Pixel 3 could achieve in low light using the Night Sigh feature. This, was promptly replicated by multiple OEMs, with “Night mode” now becoming a staple across the Android smartphone portfolio. However, no one in the industry has been able to match Google’s results, except for Huawei with its P30 Pro. The P30 Pro is capable of taking very impressive photos in the dark, using just the regular camera mode. In some scenarios, we noted that the P30 Pro’s output in the normal mode matched the Pixel’s output from Night Sight. The P30 Pro also boasted of some impressive caapbilities when it came to taking photos of the Moon, but it appears that the Google Pixel 4 could be an all-round camera for astrophotography.

Are you excited about the Google Pixel 4? Tell us in the comments!

Microsoft Surface Laptop 3 may come in 15-inch variant powered by AMD Ryzen chip

Microsoft Surface has slowly, but steadily gaining a fan following of its own, especially when it comes to the Surface Laptop. The Surface Laptop is the company’s ultra-portable laptop with a unique finish and great battery life. On October 2, it would appear that Microsoft may be seriously augmenting the Surface Laptop portfolio with a slew of new devices.

According to a report by WinFuture, this year’s Surface event on October 2 may see far more than just the regular 13-inch refresh. Amongst the notable new additions could be a new 15-inch Surface Laptop, with the same 3:2 aspect ratio display found on the Surface Book. The report also states that there may be an AMD Ryzen powered Surface Laptop as well and there is a likelihood that the Ryzen chip would power the new 15-inch model.

If Microsoft does indeed release a 15-inch variant of the Surface Laptop 3, consumers will have more choice and flexibility from the Microsoft stable. Currently, Microsoft only offers the Surface Book and the Surface in 15-inch variants, both devices catering to a class of consumers that differs in various ways from the typical Surface Laptop buyer.

While we look forward to whatever Microsoft may (or may not) announce, what we do hope for is that Microsoft update the I/O on the Surface lineup to a more modern, adequate set. The current Surface Laptop 2 (Review) comes with a single USB-A (3.0) port and a display port. All competing laptops, in comparison, feature multiple Type-C ports, if not Thunderbolt 3. Given that Intel recently announced that Thunderbolt 3.0 would now be royalty-free, we hope that the new Surface Laptop 3 would feature atleast Type-C ports, if not Thunderbolt 3.0.

Microsoft may also announce a new Surface 7.0, again with an updated I/O configuration and hopefully, upgrade to the newest processors from both Intel and AMD. As far as an update to the Surface Book goes, there’s not a lot of information out there. However, the powerful, two-piece laptop from Microsoft could also use an update to the newest GPUs from Nvidia, but that’s something we’re not going to be holding our breaths for.
