E3 2019: EA shows off Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order, Apex Legends, The Sims 4, Battlefield 5 and more

EA took the stage last night to show off games that the publisher is working on. Kicking the event off was a 15-minute unedited gameplay video of Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order. We know that the game is releasing on November 15 2019. Star Wars: Jedi Fallen Order is a third person action adventure game with a focus on lightsaber action, platforming and traversing. Since this is an action adventure game, we presume there will be puzzles to solve as well. The story of the game takes place between Star Wars: Episode 3 and Rogue One.

Moving on to other games, we got to see what's coming to Apex Legends Season 2. The game will get new characters, new guns new challenges and more. In the game, there is a new weapon called the L-STAR. The new character is called Wattson.

Next up, in Battlefield 5, players will get to experience new maps - Al Sondan and Marita. Al Sondan is a large map for those that like large open spaces. For those that like tightly closed spaces, there is a new map called Operation Underground. According to CNET, “Chapter V of Battlefield V was also a big focus. The team are attempting to recreate the conflict of Iwo Jima. With that comes a new set of weapons and vehicles specific to that theatre of war”.

The Sims 4 got a release date of July 16 for consoles and July 21for the PC. For those of you that missed it can watch the complete EA presentation below.

Asus ditches ZenFone moniker, will launch ZenFone 6 as Asus 6z in India on June 19 following Delhi High Court ruling

Asus has lost a trademark case to Telecare Network India Pvt Ltd, effectively taking away its ability to sell ‘Zen’ and ‘ZenFone’ branded smartphones and accessories in India. The ruling in favour of Telecare Network was given by the Delhi High Court last week, banning Asus from using the registered trademark for selling its mobile phones in India. Now, the company has confirmed that it will be launching its ZenFone 6 in India as the Asus 6z, ditching the ‘ZenFone’ moniker completely.

Asus has sent out media invites for the launch of the Asus 6z in India on June 19. Further, Flipkart has also changed its landing page for the ZenFone 6 and renamed it to Asus 6z. However, the Asus India website still lists the phone as the ZenFone 6, teasing its Flipkart arrival.

It is difficult to say if Asus will have to ditch the ZenFone name for all its previous and future smartphones in India. According to the Delhi High Court's ruling, Asus cannot sell or advertise, directly or indirectly, any products like mobile phones or phone accessories with the ZenFone or Zen branding starting July 23. Another hearing on the matter is scheduled for July 10.

In terms of specs, the Asus 6z name is the only change being made here. All the specs will remain the same as the ZenFone 6 (first impressions). You can read all about the specifications of the ZenFone 6 or Asus 6z here.

Microsoft teases Xbox Scarlet ahead of E3 2019 press conference

Microsoft’s E3 press conference kicks off in a couple of hours and rumours have been hinting at the reveal of a new console. Microsoft has been tweeting a build-up to the E3 conference on Twitter with a hidden message. The tweets have R 255, followed by G 36 in the second tweet and B 0 in the last one. Together this forms the code RGB (255,36,0). This is the RGB colour code for Scarlet. Microsoft has confirmed the Scarlet teaser to the Verge. CBK, who first pieced together the hidden message in the tweets has received one free month of Game Pass. In his Tweet, he writes, “In even MOREE news. Because of my discovery of the Scarlet easter egg on their E3 countdown. @Xbox sent me 1 free month of gamepass! Thank you very much.”

Microsoft has been rumoured to launch two consoles under its Scarlet code name. One will be Lockhart, a more affordable next-gen console and the other, codenamed Anaconda, which will be spruced up version of the console like Xbox One X is for this generation. Rumours suggest that the new consoles will support Ray Tracing. You can check out all the rumoured specs of the upcoming Xbox here.

This E3 is going to be big for Microsoft. Over the past 2 years, the company has gone on a buying spree, purchasing studios to help strengthen the company's first-party exclusive games library. Phil Spencer, head of Xbox tweeted, “Just finishing our final E3 rehearsal here with the team in Redmond. Feel really good about the briefing. Lots to show. We have 14 Xbox Game Studios games in the show this year, more first party games than we've ever had in the show. Fun times. #XboxE3” With so many new games coming to Microsoft’s console, it looks like this will be an E3 to remember.

Equity transcribed: What happens to late-stage VC if the Vision Fund goes away?

Welcome back to the transcribed edition of the wildly popular TechCrunch podcast, Equity. This week Kate Clark and Alex Wilhelm convened in the new studio to discuss the biggest venture capital news of the week.

There was a lot of news to get to so they started with some quick hits about Thumbtack, Bird, Scoot, Mirror and Looker. Then they got down to business and went in-depth on SoftBank’s Vision Fund and whether the money has dried up.

And folks from Social Capital are back with a new firm called Tribe Capital that looks a lot like … Social Capital.

Kate: I think the TLDR here is, if the Vision Fund doesn’t raise a Vision Fund Two, we will feel changes in the market. I think we will see deal sizes come back to earth a little bit, and I think we may see at least not increasingly large valuations, because I think that people may, especially now that it’s been a couple of years, people may underestimate the force that is a Vision Fund. We don’t have the Vision Fund, you know that obvious force that dark cloud is gone.

Alex: You’ll feel the lack. Yes. Couple of quick notes about why this might be. It isn’t just that people like Kate and I think this way. I mean, there’s been structural problems with the Vision Fund. There’s been some discussions about opacity and how it operates. How its decisions are made, and I would throw in there, there’s probably some questions about the prices it has paid. Uber managed to claw back above it’s IPO price for a hot second, and is back under it today.

Kate: And didn’t last long.
