Internet Explorer flaw can let hackers steal your files even if youre not using it: Report

Microsoft's Internet Explorer may have a small user base now, but it is posing a risk to a lot of users who have it installed on their computers. A flaw, unearthed by Security researcher John Page, will let hackers steal files from your PC. What’s scary is that the criminals can have the access to the files on a system even if the the browser is not in use. This means that if you have Internet Explorer installed on your PC but do not use it, you are still at risk.

The security researcher revealed an unpatched exploit in Internet Explorer’s handling of MHT files, which is the browser’s web archive format, that hackers can use to both spy on Windows users and steal their local data. When you press “Ctrl+S” on Internet Explorer, it will save the file in MHT format. Other popular web browsers use HTML format, though some of them still support this processing format, ZDNet said.

If you ever access an MHT file, it will be is opened using Internet Explorer by default. The flaw can “allow remote attackers to potentially exfiltrate Local files and conduct remote reconnaissance on locally installed Program version information,” Page was quoted as saying. The vulnerability affects Windows 7, Windows 10 and Windows Server 2012 R2, the researcher added.

The security researcher claims that he notified Microsoft about the vulnerability on March 27, but the company declined to consider the bug for an urgent security fix. “We determined that a fix for this issue will be considered in a future version of this product or service. At this time, we will not be providing ongoing updates of the status of the fix for this issue, and we have closed this case,” Microsoft said in a message sent to him on April 10, according to Page.

Earlier this year, Chris Jackson, a cybersecurity expert in Microsoft’s Windows division urged people to stop using Internet Explorer. Microsoft no longer supports the development and inclusion of new web standards for Internet Explorer, making it less than ideal for day-to-day use. While Internet Explorer was officially killed off by Microsoft, Edge, which started shipping with Windows 10 hasn’t really won many favours with users either.

According to statcounter, Internet Explorer had 2.56 percent global browser market share in March 2019. Microsoft Edge could only grab 2.21 percent share. Firefox is better than these two with 4.7 percent share, and Apple’s Safari has 15.64 percent share. Google Chrome sits at the top of the throne with 62.58 percent share globally.

YouTube introduces additional information panels to show if a news publisher is funded by the government or not

With General Elections now underway in many regions of India, YouTube is taking some new measures that are aimed at adding more transparency and context for news content on the platform. It is now rolling out additional information panels in English and Hindi language, which will enable viewers to understand if a channel owned by a news publisher is “funded in whole or in part" by a government or if it is a “public broadcast service”. A link to the publisher’s Wikipedia page will also be provided and all this new information will be available on the watch panel of all the videos on a news publisher’s YouTube channel.

The online video-sharing platform also features two sections where users can view Top News and discover Breaking News. Both sections display videos from authoritative news sources but the Top News shelf prominently highlights videos in search results. On the other hand, the Breaking News shelf shows up on the YouTube homepage and is meant to convey information about the latest breaking news from trusted sources. The two features are available in more than 30 countries worldwide, and in both English and Hindi in India.

On certain topics, events and publishers, users will also see information panels that provide additional context. YouTube also recently expanded its information panels to introduce fact checks from eligible publishers to the platform in both, English and Hindi. Such information panels are said to add context to new topics that are “prone to misinformation.” “The fact checks we surface rely on the open source Schema.org ClaimReview markup process. By following this process, any eligible publisher can contribute fact check articles that could show in search results on Google Search, Google News, and now, YouTube.” states YouTube’s media release.

YouTube is not the only service that is trying to dispel fake news during this election season. WhatsApp recently added new privacy features that enable users to choose who can and cannot add them to groups. Additionally, in partnership with PROTO, WhatsApp has launched a tip line to curb the spread of misinformation and fake news on the platform. One can add the new tip line number +91-9643-000-888 to their contacts and use the contact to verify text messages, videos and photos circulating on the platform with regards to the 2019 Lok Sabha elections.

Astronomers want you to name the fifth-largest dwarf planet

Let’s be honest. When left to the imagination and choice of astronomers, the names of newly discovered planets get really weird and technical. Try these for examples: CoRoT-7b, an exoplanet in the Monoceros constellation; HD 189733 b, an extrasolar planet in the Vulpecula constellation; Gliese 1214 b, an exoplanet in the Ophiuchus constellation. Luckily for all of us, the discoverers of trans-Neptunian object (225088) 2007 OR10 have decided to hand the job of naming their discovery to you.

As reported by BGR, astronomers Meg Schwamb, Mike Brown, and David Rabinowitz discovered 2007 OR10 back in 2007 but just couldn’t come up with an appropriate nickname. It was initially named “Snow White” because of its presumed whiteness but the name was dropped after the astronomers realised 2007 OR10 was actually one of the reddest objects in the Kuiper belt. And so, 2007 OR10 remains the only known object (and the largest) in the Solar System to exist without an official name—yet.

To help name 2007 OR10 head over to this site and select Vote. You’ll then be taken to a page with three proposed naming options: “Vili”, “Gonggong”, and “Holle”. All three names trickle down from ancient mythology. Select any one and hit Submit. The last date for the poll is May 10. According to the site, the option that receives the most votes will be submitted to the Minor Planet Center (MPC) and the International Astronomical Union (IAU) as a formal suggestion for 2007 OR10’s new official name.

2007 OR10 is considered to be the fifth-largest dwarf planet, after Pluto, Eris, Haumea, and Makemake. Home to red methane frost that’s irradiated by sunlight and cosmic rays, it’s supposed to be one of the reddest objects known to humans. The surface, which is known to be predominantly rocky, is said to contain water ice. 2007 OR10 has only one known moon, which is known to be less than 100 kilometres in diameter. If you ask us, we’d call it Gonggong, the Chinese water god with red hair and dragon-like tail.
