Israel to launch second lunar rover after first Beresheet crashed

Just three days after announcing the crash-landing of its first rover to the moon, Israeli non-profit organisation SpaceIL announced its plans to build and send a second one. Morris Kahn, one of SpaceIL’s major donors, made the announcement on Twitter in the form of a 45-second video. “The dream goes on,” he wrote in his tweet. Although a special task force has been formed to start work on the second lunar rover, there’s no word yet on when it will make it to the moon. The name of the mission this time is Beresheet 2.0.

According to Israel Today, he said on the nation’s Channel 12 News, “We started something and we need to finish it. We’ll put our flag on the moon. Project Beresheet 2 begins tomorrow… A mission team will be meeting tomorrow to start work. ...This is also a good lesson for the youth. I said that if you fail you need to get up and try again and this is an example I have to give them.”

It’s hard to call the first Beresheet mission a failure because the lander came very close to landing on the moon without any problems. But sadly, when it was just 150 metres above the lunar surface, the team on Earth lost all communication with the lander, leading to Beresheet’s hard, fatal landing. On its journey to the moon, Beresheet was to hit a maximum speed of 10 kilometres per second and travel a total of 6.5 million kilometres, which is the longest distance travelled to get to the moon.

Beresheet was carrying scientific equipment to measure the local magnetic field on the moon. The 585-kilogramme rover was also carrying with it memories of Israel. It was carrying a small digital “time capsule”, which contained an entire copy of Wikipedia in English, Israel’s national anthem, drawings by children, songs in Hebrew, and the memoir of a Holocaust survivor. The plaque on the rover read, “Am Yisrael Chai” (which translates to, “The nation of Israel lives,” from Hebrew) and the slogan “Small Country, Big Dreams.”

Apple may bring Face ID to Macs, Touchbar to Magic Keyboard: Patent

Apple has been expanding the Face ID technology since its launch with the iPhone X back in 2017. There are reports which claim that the technology will become mainstream in iPads too as it has in the iPhones. In the latest development, a patent granted to Apple has unveiled that the Cupertino-based tech giant may be bringing Face ID technology to its Mac PCs as well. Further, Apple could also put a Macbook Pro-type Touchbar on the Magic Keyboard. This is the second patent related to Face ID on the Mac in a year, and a third one related to Touchbar on the keyboard.

The patent (accessed by Patently Apple) granted to Apple talks about the wake up feature. “The patent describes how Macs in sleep mode could use their camera to look for faces. This would presumably be a feature added to Power Nap, where a sleeping Mac is still able to carry out certain background activities without using much power. If your Mac spots a face, it then uses facial recognition to wake the Mac if the user is identified,” a claim in the patent read.

It explains that the Mac PC will remain in sleep mode while it is figuring out whether or not any face is in view and then enter a higher powered mode to run the facial recognition part before fully waking the machine. But there could be one key difference between Face ID on iPhones and the one that may come on Macs. While iPhones have “a facial detection sensor,” Macs may have “a retina scanner.”

This may have been done because the company knows that the Face ID is not the safest solution to the lock a phone. There have been incidents where people have fooled the Face ID and unlocked someone else’s phone using 3D masks and/or by taking advantage of the striking resemblance to the user, regardless of age or gender.

As mentioned there also a talk about the Touchbar in the Magic Keyboard. Now these keyboards are powered by batteries and are connected to the Mac via bluetooth. Incorporating an OLED panel is also expected to use more power, hence, the battery life could also be affected due to the inclusion of the touch panel in the keyboard.

Game of Thrones Season 8 new title sequence explained

Game of Thrones season 8, Episode 1 is out and you can stream it in India right now on Hotstar. While we don’t want to give you any spoilers before you start watching the episode, this is something you might want to read about once you’ve seen it. Right off the bat, you will notice that the title sequence for GoT season 8 is starkly different from all of those we’ve seen in the past. Game of Thrones has always had an evolving title sequence, with new places added every season, depicting their importance in that season’s storyline. This year though, Season 8’s opening credits have received a facelift and show a redesigned map with all new locations, possibly hinting at what we can expect to see in the upcoming episodes. Instead of flying across the various locations of the continent of Westeros, the credits show smaller locations and sometimes even go into the interiors of larger locations like the Winterfell castle. Notably, for the first time ever, the opening credits show the Iron Throne in all its glory, pointing towards the final battle for the coveted seat of power.

The credits for Game of Thrones season 8 open with The Wall, which has a gaping opening created from when the Night King and White Walker dragon Viserion destroyed it in Season 7. The intro then goes on to the Last Hearth, the Northernmost castle and seat of House Umber. This is the first point where the Night King’s army would have reached after breaking through The Wall. And yes, there is definite proof of that in the first episode, but we won’t spoil it for you.

After House Umber’s seat, the titles move to Winterfell Castle and the Crypts of Winterfell, which we also saw as a significant place in Season 8’s teasers. Remember the one where Sansa, Jon and Arya walk the cold corridors of the crypts? The importance of the place is once again signified in a conversation between Jon Snow and Samwell Tarly in the first episode. What will it reveal? We’ll let you find out.

Next stop on the opening credits is King’s Landing and as the camera dives deep into the castle, we see the basement where skulls of dead dragons are kept. The last stop is the Iron Throne in all its glory. If you follow the entire path of the title sequence, it is one which the Night King’s army is expected to take in order to move south and grab the Iron Throne.

“This season is a lot more intimate and grounded,” credits creator Kirk Shintani told Vulture.  “The show has been inexorably moving towards the Iron Throne,” Wall told the publication. “Being able to go inside allowed us to actually end the title sequence at the throne,” he added.

Even the astrolabe for the new title sequence has changed and it has three new bands, depicting events from previous seasons as well as images of Westeros’ history.

Meanwhile, if you have finished watching Episode 1, here's a teaser for Episode 2.

A disc-less Xbox One S could launch on May 4: Report

The internet has been abuzz with information about the new disc-less Xbox One S for quite some time now and it looks like we have some new details about the upcoming console. Packaging material along with renders of the device has leaked and this time we have a price point and a launch date. The leaked renders called the disc-less Xbox One S as the Xbox One S All Digital. The console will come with 1TB of storage, boasts of 4K and HDR capabilities on the box and has no disc drive.

According to the leaked information, users will get the disc-less console in the box along with one controller, three pre-installed digital games - Minecraft, Sea of Thieves and Forza Horizon 3. We assume gamers will get the standard one-month game pass subscription and 15 days gold subscription with the console, but that may change. The console has an expected price of EUR 229.99 (Rs 23,500 approx) directly converted and will launch on May 7 in Europe. There is no information about when the console will launch in other markets.

It was expected that the disc-less Xbox would make its debut at E3 2019. E3 2019 is scheduled to kick off on 11 Jun 2019 and it looks like Microsoft can enjoy a lot of limelight as for the first time in the history of E3, Sony will not be there at the show floor.

Microsoft is expected to showcase its next generation of consoles at E3 and rumour mills are abuzz about what the hardware will have. It is expected to be more powerful than the recently announced Google Stadia and also boast of Ray Tracing. You can check out the details of the rumoured hardware of the upcoming Xbox here.

Before you go ahead and think Microsoft is killing the disc drive we say hold your horses. Microsoft is looking to cater to all kinds of players with its services. It showed off Project X-Cloud where Forza Horizon 4 was running on an Android smartphone with an Xbox One controller. Project X-Cloud is expected to get into public testing soon. You can read more about Microsoft's cloud gaming initiative here. The new flagship consoles are expected to have a disc drive, and we will know more about that at E3. The company already has Play Anywhere for its first-party games which means that you can purchase the game on your Xbox and play it on your PC as well.
