It’s been three years since Apple announced the iPhone SE and fans of small-screen smartphones have been waiting for a follow-up. While smartphones are growing bigger in size, there is an audience for small-screen smartphones and currently, the premium segment is limited to devices like the Samsung Galaxy S10, S10e and the Pixel 3 to name a few. The smallest iPhone is the iPhone XR and it hasn’t garnered the attention it deserves.

If information circulating the internet is to be believed, then Apple is working on a 4.8-inch smartphone called the iPhone XE. PC Tablet says that “Our source which is closely associated with Foxconn’s manufacturing facility in India has confirmed the iPhone SE 2 is actually iPhone XE, but they are not going to make it”. The report goes on to say that the XE will have an iPhone X-like edge-to-edge 4.8” AMOLED display with the notch. The notch will house the front facing camera, earpiece and all the technical wizardry that goes into making Face ID work. Because of the presence of Face ID, just like the iPhone X and XS devices, there will be no home button on the smartphone. The report goes on to say that the smartphone will come with an aluminium back, so you can forget about wireless charging. At the back, the smartphone is speculated to house a single 12 MP camera with a ƒ/1.8 aperture. This is similar to what we have seen on the iPhone XR. The processor powering the smartphone is speculated to be the same A12 BIONIC chip powering current Apple flagship smartphones.

There is no information on storage capacity or battery capacity of the smartphone but the report says that the iPhone XE may start at $600 and the top variant could cost as much as $800. For manufacturing of the smartphone, the report says, “The phone is supposed to be manufactured in India at a manufacturing facility of Apple’s manufacturing partner, Wistron, under Govt. of India’s “Make in India” initiative. Because Foxconn will be busy making the latest ones”

Apple has stopped sharing sales numbers for its iPhones and speculations suggest that the next iPhone could have a square camera placement at the back. Since this year we expect Apple to rehaul the iPhone design, we can expect a smaller device to mimic the iPhone X or XS to appeal to those looking for a smaller iPhone.

Also Read:

Netflix removes AirPlay feature support from iOS app: Report

Apple may launch three OLED-based iPhones in 2020: Report

Engineering college students reportedly scammed Apple out of about Rs 6 crores
Windows 10 no longer needs you to Safely Remove Hardware

For nearly two decades now, the Windows user base has remained divided into two major factions: those who “safely” eject their USB storage drives before unplugging them, and those who don’t. After Microsoft’s recent support article on the matter, the former will get a chance to say, “Oh, thank god!” and the latter, a chance to say, “We told you so!” Windows 10 now uses a different default policy that no longer requires you to use the Safely Remove Hardware process before unplugging a USB storage device.

“Windows defines two main policies, Quick removal and Better performance, that control how the system interacts with external storage devices such as USB thumb drives or Thunderbolt-enabled external drives. Beginning in Windows 10 version 1809, the default policy is Quick removal. In earlier versions of Windows the default policy was Better performance,” writes Microsoft in its recent support article. "If you select Better performance, we recommend that you also select Enable write caching on the device," Microsoft adds.

The two removal policies for external storage media

The Quick removal policy keeps storage operations going in such a way that USB storage devices can be unplugged at any time without needing the Safely Remove Hardware process. On the other hand, the Better performance policy ensures improved system performance. When in effect, it lets Windows cache write operations to the external USB drive. However, to protect data integrity on the external device, it requires the use of the Safely Remove Hardware process.

For those not aware of Safely Remove Hardware, it’s a safety procedure performed by the user before unplugging any USB storage device. It involves finding the Safely Remove Hardware icon on the taskbar, right-clicking it, and selecting the hardware to be unplugged. Windows recommends the use of the safe ejection process to avoid data corruption on flash and external hard drives. However, the procedure has been considered unnecessary or even annoying by many seasoned Windows users in the past, leading to the formation of the faction that doesn’t believe in ejecting devices ‘safely’.

Inline image courtesy: Microsoft

Related Read: Microsoft will let you defer Windows 10 May Update for up to 35 days
Google Pixel 3a, Pixel 3a XL are being tested in India: Report

A couple of days after the Google Pixel 3a appeared as a link on Google’s own Play Store, a famous tipster has claimed that both the mid-range offerings from the search giant are being tested in India. In the camera department, both the phones are expected to have 12MP camera on the back and an 8MP wide-angle front shooter.

Under the hood, the smaller variant is claimed to have Snapdragon 670 SoC and 4GB of RAM, and it may draw power from a 3,000mAh battery. The larger variant may ship with a Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 mobile platform with 4GB of RAM. There is no information on the battery capacity of the Pixel 3a XL.
A PUBG Mobile streamer has posted a video on YouTube claiming that an update has broken the sound of the game. He says that the game now has a “weird” sound, making it unplayable for some. Interestingly, the streamer hasn’t specified which update broke the sound of the game, and given that the developers roll out updates frequently, it is hard to pinpoint the exact package that brought the sound issue. He has appealed to the developers of the game to release a fix for the same.

“Something changed with the sound, boys. I can’t hear anything anymore. There is no directional sound anymore, it’s just noise. They broke the sound in PUBG Mobile in one of these recent updates. It sounds like I’m playing underwater,” The person speaking in the new video from Powerbang Gaming said, claiming that earlier he could identify enemy directions but now he cannot do that.

In the video, we can also see the person tinkering with the game’s sound settings but nothing happened. He also says that the PUBG team keeps on adding features and content while the gameplay continues to suffer. Recently, PUBG Mobile released the 0.12.0 beta update fixing multiple bugs to deliver a smoother gaming experience, however, we do not know for sure if the sound issue has been resolved.

Meanwhile, the beta update brings along several new features. Players can now take their pet companions such as eagles as pet companions into the game, which will be visible only to them and their teammates. The aim is to let users earn XP in some undisclosed way. These companions need 10,000 XP to level up and unlock new animations, and XP can be bought in the form of food where each piece of food grants 100XP to the pet.

Additionally, there’s a new “Survive Until the Rescue arrives” event where users need to “survive till extraction.” In this mode, players will be placed at a random area on the Erangel map, and they will need to survive till they are extracted. Currently, the event is called 'Zombie: Darkest Night' mode. The move is aimed at keeping the players engaged to the game at a time when there are reports of potential competitors cropping up.

Related Read:

Exclusive: Call of Duty: Mobile coming to India in November
Netflix removes AirPlay feature support from iOS app: Report

Netflix has pulled the AirPlay support from the iOS app, a media report has said. SlashGear reports that there have been a lot of instances where users have complained that the AirPlay was no longer working for them on their iPhones and iPads. The development was first spotted by a streamer on the video streaming platform’s support page.

“We want to make sure our members have a great Netflix experience on any device they use. With AirPlay support rolling out to third-party devices, there isn’t a way for us to distinguish between devices (what is an Apple TV vs. what isn’t) or certify these experiences. Therefore, we have decided to discontinue Netflix AirPlay support to ensure our standard of quality for viewing is being met. Members can continue to access Netflix on the built-in app across Apple TV and other devices,” Netflix reportedly said.

AirPlay on iOS and Mac devices is a feature that allows users to send audio, video, images and screenshots between Apple devices that share a similar network. Using Bluetooth and Wi-Fi, AirPlay lets users to play the same song on the multiple HomePod speakers in a house. Moreover, as several smart TV manufacturers add support for the feature, it also lets content from an iOS or Mac device to be viewable on smart TVs.

Netflix’s iOS app has supported AirPlay since 2013, but now the users are stating that when they tried to use AirPlay in the Netflix app, a pop-up error message appeared that said, “Cannot play title. Please try again later.” Even if the AirPlay support is pulled, iOS users can stream videos on smart TVs because the Netflix app usually comes installed them. The one edge that AirPlay users on iOS had was the ability to stream content from their own account on a smart TV without punching in their Netflix login credentials.

Recently, Apple launched its own premium video streaming service Apple TV+ that comes with the iPhone-maker’s original programming in a redesigned Apple TV app. The Apple TV app will also be available across a range of smart TVs and platforms, including Sony, LG, Samsung and even on Amazon FireTV stick as well as on Roku devices.

Related Read:
Apple Arcade is a game subscription service for iOS, Apple TV and Mac Samsung Galaxy S10s in-display fingerprint sensor fooled by a 3D printed fingerprint map

Face Unlock is now a feature that can be found in phones priced above Rs 1 lakh to those price under Rs 10,000. However, despite its meteoric rise to become a convenient way of unlocking your phone, it could never replace the fingerprint sensor in terms of reliability. It has been established that a fingerprint sensor on a smartphone is far more secure while face recognition systems has been proven to be fooled. However, the new breed of in-display fingerprint sensor is also not free of vulnerabilities.

A video that recently surfaced online shows the Samsung Galaxy S10’s ultrasonic fingerprint sensor easily fooled by a 3D-printed fingerprint pattern. Samsung relies on Qualcomm’s ultrasonic solution that creates a 3D map to authenticate the fingerprint. Qualcomm claimed the solution is more secure than the optical fingerprint sensor OEMs like OnePlus uses where a 2D map is used to authenticate.

However, in the video, the user 3D printed a fingerprint pattern on a transparent strip and put it on the Galaxy S10’s display right above the fingerprint sensor. After a slight readjustment of the position, the Galaxy S10 was unlocked. To create the 3D map, the user took a photograph of his fingerprint from a wine glass with a smartphone, and then used software to calculate the depth information. The data was then used to 3D print the fingerprint pattern on a transparent strip.

The user in the video states a DSLR can be used to get an even clearer photo of the fingerprint sensor. What’s scary is that the Galaxy S10 was unlocked every time the 3D printed fingerprint map was placed rightly on the screen.

Related Read:

Samsung Galaxy S10 ultrasonic fingerprint sensor can survive screen scratches but not damages: JerryRigEverything
Twitter is testing author, mentioned and following labels on replies

Twitter is working on a feature that will make it easy for users to join conversations as well as let other know about the creator of the tweet, the one who is mentioned in it as well as those who are following the person who posted the original tweet. The company announced this development on its official Twitter handle. It seems that only a limited number of people will be able to see the update.

“We want it to be easy to follow and join conversations on Twitter. We’re testing out labels on replies: author mentioned and following. If you see them, let us know what you think!” The company said in a tweet. The feature is not found in the latest version of Twitter in the Google Play Store (v7.89) that was released on April 1, which means that it could be a server-side update. There is no information if the iOS users will also be getting the feature when it is released for the masses.

The “author” label is likely to be applied to the replies tweeted by the person who posted the original message in a thread as well as to see if a particular response in a thread came from the creator of the tweet. The “mentioned” label is likely to be applied to a reply from a Twitter user whose “handle” is mentioned in the thread's original tweet. The “following” label is likely to appear on a reply tweeted by a Twitter user who follows the author.

The latest development seems to be in lines with Twitter’s initiative to make tweets “easier to read, understand, and join conversations”, which it announced earlier this year. The company even launched a new beta app “twttr” designed to let people (those who enroll in the programme) to test upcoming Twitter features.

Recently, Twitter made it easier for users to capture photos and videos and share them quickly in a fresh tweet. Twitter announced the rollout of the new feature in a tweet and this camera-focussed feature is expected to released for both Android and iOS users. There were also reports about the “Subscribe to conversation” feature that lets users stay notified about tweets you’re interested in - or follow them without having to like or comment on them.

Related Read:

Twitter app updated with darker 'Lights out' colour scheme

We want it to be easy to follow and join conversations on Twitter.
The line between iOS and Android have significantly blurred in the past few years with gesture navigation, digital well-being and more features now common across the two platform. If a report by 9to5Google is to be believed, the line is going to become even blurrier with the introduction of Android’s version of 3D Touch, called “Deep Press”.

The feature was discovered while testing the latest developer build of Android Q. Information present in documentation related to “MotionEvent” function of Android Q have revealed there will be something called “Deep Press” in the upcoming Android OS.

The documentation states that presently, users intentionally press harder on the screen when long-pressing. Deep Press should be “used to accelerate the long press behaviour.” Essentially, deep press will be a feature where an action can be triggered when the user presses down on the display harder than usual.

The feature sounds quite familiar to Force Touch or 3D Touch, a pressure-sensitive navigation feature which debuted in the first Apple Watch in 2014. \

However, just because there’s support for Deep Press in Android Q doesn’t mean it can be used. It needs specialised hardware for it to work. However, if Android Q does support it, OEMs can be encourage to install components to enable the feature.

The Deep Press feature will possibly debut with Google Pixel 4 which is expected to launch in October, a few months after Android Q rolls out to the masses.

Related Read:

Android Q may bring system-wide Dark Mode: Report

Google I/O 2019 schedule goes live, covers Android Q, Stadia, Google Assistant
Netflix testing weekly plans in India starting Rs 65

Netflix is testing out its cheapest plan in India where viewers will be paying on a weekly basis. The weekly plans start from Rs 65 for the mobile-only plan, and goes all the way up to Rs 200 for the Ultra plan. The plans presently seem exclusive only for India.

The new plans have started showing up on Netflix India’s website. You can pay Rs 65 per week for a mobile-only plan, Rs 125 for the basic plan (SD only), Rs 165 for the Standard Plan (two devices, HD) and Rs 200 for the Ultra plan (four devices, 4K).

Apart from this, Netflix is also testing a Rs 250 per month mobile-only plan in India, which can be seen on the plans section. The mobile-plan lets users watch content on only one screen at a time which to be either a smartphone or a tablet. The plan also restricts quality to SD and you won’t be able to watch shows in HD or 4K.

The weekly-plans have only started showing on Saturday and before this Netflix was believed to be experimenting with the plan. The plans aren’t necessarily cheap if you calculate on a monthly basis, but it does offer the flexibility to pay only when you want to watch something, effectively offering content at a lower price.

Despite the seemingly affordable plans, Netflix remains to be one of the most expensive video streaming service in India. Amazon Prime Video and Hotstar are both more affordable and both of them offer monthly and yearly plans. Hotstar even has a free tier where it lets you watch some content for free.
Two engineering students in the US reportedly swindled Apple out of thousands of dollars. As per a report by The Oregonian, two students named Yangyang Zhou and Quan Jiang imported thousands of fake Apple iPhones and sent them to Apple for replacement. The two apparently received the counterfeit iPhone shipments from China and sent them back to Apple again after getting them replaced from Apple by stating that they wouldn't power on, exploiting the company’s replacement warranty policy. Zhou and Jiang’s contact in China sold the original iPhones off at a standard price and paid a cut of the profit to them.

As per the report, Federal agents in Portland commenced investigating the import of counterfeit shipments in April 2017, after the U.S Customs and Border Protection seized five such shipments from Hong Kong. A Homeland Security agent identified Jiang as one of the alleged importers of fake phones and interviewed him. Jiang reportedly denied knowing that the phones were knock-offs and said that he received 20 to 30 iPhones regularly from his associate in China and submitted them as they didn’t turn on and sent the repaired phones back to him. His associate back in China paid Jiang’s mother in lieu of “his labor and efforts,” who deposited it in an account that the student accessed from the US.

Jiang is said to have submitted 2,000 units in 2017 to Apple for warranty repairs, sometimes by walking into an Apple store and at times by raising service support online and shipping it to Apple. Adrian Punderson, an Apple representative, said that the company checks every device for authenticity before performing repairs and sometimes rejects them if they are not genuine, the report states. Jiang apparently had 3,069 iPhone warranty claims by either his name, email, address or IP address, all citing the reason that the device wouldn't power on. Apple replaced 1,493 of these phones and rejected the rest, which reportedly cost the company $895,800 (Rs 6 crores approx).

Apple’s engineers were unable to find out whether the devices were fake since they wouldn’t power on, the report states. As The Verge points out, Apple apparently doesn’t ask for proof of purchase. Additionally, the company sent Jiang cease-and-desist notices to Jiang’s address, to which he didn’t respond. Jiang reportedly said that he never received any notification from Apple that the phones being returned by him were counterfeit.

Both Zhou and Jian remain out of custody. Zhou recently completed his engineering at the Oregon State University and appeared before the U.S. District Court in Portland. Jiang is being monitored by GPS. Jiang was studying engineering last spring at Linn Benton Community College. This is not the first time someone has tried to con a conglomerate into shelling out money. A previous report claimed that a Lithuanian man duped Google and Facebook by producing fake invoices. The companies paid up the fake invoices worth $122 million without realising that the invoices listed things they didn’t even order.

Related Reads:

Man steals $122 million from Google and Facebook by producing fake invoices
