Honor V20 with 64-inch All-View display and 48MP rear camera launched in China

Highlights: The Honor V20 launched in China with a punch-hole display It comes with a 48MP rear camera It also has Link Turbo technology   In a bid to be the first phone ever to sport a punch-hole camera in the display, Huawei announced the Honor V20 smartphone earlier this month. Though the company did not reveal the design and all specifications, it mentioned three USPs of the device: All-View display, a 48MP rear camera and the Link Turbo technology, which is said to enable faster download speeds by leveraging both Wi-Fi and cellular connectivity. The company has now made the phone official in China and it is now listed on Chinese e-tailer VMall. Honor View 20, first showcased at an event in Hong Kong, is company’s first smartphone with a punch-hole display for a selfie camera and a 48MP rear camera to be launched commercially. The Honor View 20, or Honor V20, is priced at CNY 2999 (approximately Rs 30,000) for the 6GB RAM and 128GB storage variant. The 8GB RAM and 128GB storage variant will cost users CNY 3499 (approximately Rs 35,500). Honor has also launched a special Moschino Edition of the V20 with 8GB RAM and 256GB storage for CNY 3999 (approximately Rs 40,000). Moschino is an Italian luxury fashion house specialising in leather accessories, shoes, luggage and fragrances. It is not known whether the company will launch this variant globally. Honor is set to launch the device in Paris on January 22. A few days ago, a Maserati Edition of the smartphone was spotted on the internet, and it may be possible that instead of Moschino Edition, the company will launch the Maserati Edition globally. Honor View 20 specifications The Honor View 20 features a 6.4-inch Full HD+ All-View display with a resolution of 2310x1080 pixels. The All-View display is nothing but a panel with a punch hole in it to incorporate a selfie shooter (Samsung calls the same type of panel as the Infinity-O display). Huawei says that the circular cutout on the top left corner is 4.5mm in diameter. There is a glass back panel with V-shaped pattern under the glass. The smartphone will be available in blue, black and red colours. The smartphone is powered by an octa-core Kirin 980 flagship chipset, which is manufactured using 7nm process. In the camera department, the Honor View 20 has a 48MP Sony IMX586 CMOS sensor on the back. The sensor uses pixel binning technology to give a 1.6 micron pixel. The second sensor of the dual rear camera is used to capture the depth. The punch-hole in the display houses a 25MP sensor with f/2.0 aperture. There is a 4,000mAh battery with super fast charge support. Th phone runs Android Pie 9.0 with Magic UI 2.0 on top.   Related Read: Honor View 20 Maserati Edition Samsung Galaxy A8s launched with Infinity-O display   http://bit.ly/2Srl0jr

Huawei says it shipped over 200 million smartphones in 2018 globally

Highlights: Huawei ships over 200 million smartphones in 2018 globally Last year it shipped 153 million devices Shipments have increased from 3 million units in 2010 to 200 million units this year   Huawei has announced that its smartphone shipments for 2018 have exceeded 200 million units, a new record for the company. The company says that the 200 million devices include Huawei P20 and Mate 20 series of smartphones. The company claims that in the past eight years, its smartphone shipments have increased from 3 million units to 200 million units. The achievement could be termed as a feat for the company, especially when it was mired in a number of controversies. Earlier this year, the US banned its government officials from using smartphones from Huawei and ZTE because it considers these devices as security threats. It has been alleged that China could ask Huawei and ZTE to create backdoors for spying in their smartphones. Recently, Huawei CFO Meng Wanzhou was arrested on December 1 in Vancouver by Canadian authorities for alleged Iran sanction violations. It seems these did not have much impact given companies rise in the shipment numbers. Huawei says that since its launch in March, the Huawei P20 series global shipments have exceeded 16 million units, with female users accounting for nearly half of that number. Huawei has already sold over 5 million units within two months of the release of the Huawei Mate 20 series, which is equipped with a Kirin 980 chipset, the company said. Huawei Nova 3 became the most popular selfie phone of 2018. Huawei also says that the Nova series has sold over 65 million units till 2018. Huawei says that it believes that the privacy and security of its users is as important as making “appealing products”. The company claims that it puts the issue of privacy protection ahead of basic commercial interests, and complies with Generally Accepted Privacy Principles (GAPP) for privacy protection as well as all requirements set forth in the EU's General Data Protection Regulation (GDPR). “Looking to the future, Huawei's consumer business will focus on the core concept of 'consumer-centric', and will dare to keep innovating, and make every effort to become a pioneer and leader in the next wave of the smartphone revolution, as well as constantly create new value for consumers, let our consumers better enjoy their lives, and truly make Huawei a brand that is beloved by consumers the world over,” Richard Yu, CEO of Huawei Consumer Business Group, said in a statement. Huawei says that in the past eight years, it has gone from being dismissed as a statistical “Other” to ranking among the top three players in the world. Moreover, in the second and third quarters of 2018, Huawei became the world's second largest smartphone manufacturer, with a global market share of 14.6 percent. Huawei surpassed Apple to secure the second spot in the list of worldwide smartphone vendors in the second quarter of 2018, market research firm Gartner had said earlier this year. Meanwhile, Huawei has announced that its custom user interface, EMUI 9, which is based on Android Pie will be rolled out to nine smartphone models, which are Huawei Mate 9, Mate 9 Porsche Edition, Mate 9 Pro, Huawei P10, Huawei P10 Plus, Honor V9, Honor 9, Nova 2S, and Honor Note 10. Recently, Huawei released the EMUI 9 and Android 9 Pie update to P20 and P20 Pro smartphones. The EMUI 9 brings gesture controls, quick startup of apps and improves performance. It also brings new notification sounds and some safety-related tweaks.   Related Read: Huawei Android Pie based EMUI 9.0 Huawei Mate 20 Pro Review   http://bit.ly/2EOQaOl

Heres how much TV channels will cost from January 1 as per new TRAI price regime

Telecom regulator TRAI has revelaed the list of maximum retail prices of pay channels for subscribers. The new tariffs will allow subscribers to have the option to pay for only those channels they want to watch at an MRP that has been decided by the broadcasters. Major broadcasters like Star, Viacom and Zee have announced the prices of groups, with each containing different channels for specific prices. The new pricing is a way for customers to save money on channels they don’t watch. Usually, DTH providers offer plans that have a bunch of channels grouped together for a specific price.   In the new price list, HD channels are priced higher than SD channels. The prices ranges from Rs 19 for Star Plus to Rs 0.5 for ABP Ananda. Most entertainment channels are priced higher in the neighbourhood of Rs 8 to Rs 15, while news channels are available for a lesser price. The new price regime needs customers to select at least 100 channels, out of which 26 are mandatory Doordarshan channels. The approximate total for such a package should cost Rs 130 plus 18 percent GST. The other government channels are free-to-air (FTA) and users will have to pay Rs 20 additionally. Save for the 26 Doordarshan channels, subscribers can select any channel they wish to watch. The new tariff regime by TRAI requires broadcasters to draft price per month for the channels. The order also allows broadcasters to bunch channels together for a specific price. The price of the bunch, however, cannot be below 85 percent of the sum of the price of the channels grouped in the bunch. http://bit.ly/2ENatek

Samsung Galaxy S9, S9+ receiving Android 9 Pie update, other devices to get update in 2019

Samsung has a Christmas treat for Galaxy S9 and S9+ users. The Android 9 Pie update with OneUI is rolling out to the Galaxy S9 and S9+ devices. The update is being pushed out earlier than the January 2019 window Samsung gave earlier, but according to Sammobile and Android Authority, users in Germany are receiving the update. While Galaxy S9 and S9+ users had the option to sign up for the beta version of the update, the reports confirm this is in fact, the stable update that’s rolling out to users, even to the non-beta users that are on Android Oreo-based Samsung Experience UI. It’s not clear whether the update is rolling out globally or whether it’s restricted to some regions. However, Reddit users also confirmed the update has hit Europe and some parts of Asia. Users from Italy, Switzerland, Greece and UAE also reported the update becoming available to their devices. It’s likely the international variant of the Galaxy S9 and the S9+, powered by the Exynos 9810 are receiving the update. Some even reported that the update came up right after installing the December security patch. You might want to get your phone updated to the latest patch and check for updates. Furthermore, Samsung also revealed its update roadmap for Android 9 Pie on the Samsung Members app. The full list includes: Galaxy S9 and S9+ (January 2019) Galaxy Note 9 (February 2019) Galaxy A8 2018, A8+, A7 2018, A9 2018, Tab S4 10.5 (April 2019) Galaxy J4, J4+, J6, J6+, A8 Star (May 2019) Galaxy J7 2017 (July 2019) Galaxy J7 Duo (August 2019) Galaxy Xcover4, J3 2017, Tab S3 9.7 (September 2019) Galaxy Tab A 2017, Tab Active2, Tab A 10.5 (October 2019) The list reveals that Samsung will take its time to roll out the update across its portfolio of devices. Interestingly, only phones launched after 2017 will receive the Android 9 Pie update. This means the Galaxy S7 and the S7 Edge and older devices will not get the update, as both phones have received the promised two version updates. The OneUI beta update to the Galaxy Note 9 revealed new icons and a new flavour to the interface that looked much more refined. Right from the notification panel to a more Material Design-like design based on Android 9 Pie. There’s even a redesigned system menu with dark mode and other new options. Samsung has listed out all that’s new in its support docs. http://bit.ly/2EPH97A
