Photos show crater on Mars filled with water ice
Ready for some chilly winter news? The European Space Agency (ESA) has released some incredible photos of the Martian crater Korolev, and by the looks of it, it’s properly brimming with water ice. The enormous crater is 83-kilometres wide and about 1.8-kilometres deep. Throughout the year it contains thick water ice, with some of it receding only during summer. Composite photos of it were captured by the Mars Express orbiter earlier this year. According to the ESA, the crater is perennially filled with ice because of a phenomenon called ‘cold trap’, in which air moving over the gigantic ice deposit cools down and sinks, thereby creating a layer of cold air that sits just above the ice mound itself. This layer acts as a shield and helps the ice remain stable and prevents it from heating up and vanishing. The crater is named after Chief Rocket Engineer and Spacecraft Designer, Sergei Korolev of the USSR. Composite images of crater Korolev were captured by the Mars Express High Resolution Stereo Camera (HRSC) over its numerous passes around the Red Planet’s orbit. According to the ESA, the images were captured as five different “strips” that were later combined to form a single image, and each strip was captured over a different orbit. ESA, who later posted the images on Twitter, estimates that crater Korolev has about 2,200 cubic kilometres of water ice. The Mars Express mission began on June 2, 2003 and is the second longest surviving, active spacecraft behind NASA’s Mars Odyssey. “The satellite fired its main engine and entered orbit around the Red Planet on 25 December,” writes ESA in its website, which is six months after its launch from Earth. This year’s Christmas Day will mark the orbiter’s 15th anniversary around the Red Planet. Cover and inline image courtesy: ESAOnePlus edits out OnePlus 6Ts bottom bezel in its advertisement
Do you think that the bottom bezel on the OnePlus 6T is a bit too much? Well, it looks like OnePlus seems to think so. In a new promotional video the company post on social media, the company seems to have edited out almost the entire bottom chin on the display. This is especially evident at the 44 second mark in the video when a user is shown playing Fortnite. The edit was first spotted by Twitter user, @pedropeguerojr. While editing photos and videos for advertising purposes is nothing new, especially in the fashion industry. This highlights the fact that buyer shouldn’t take anything at face value, especially with regards to seen in any promotional photos or videos. Regardless, it also suggests that the guys over at OnePlus themselves aren’t very big fans of the bottom chin. So maybe we’ll see a removal of the bezel in future iterations of the phone. It related news, OnePlus recently introduced the OnePlus 6T McLaren Edition. The phone is pretty much the same as the standard version of the phone. It it comes with 10GB RAM as well as the new Warp Charge technology. OnePlus claims that the new charging technology allows for the phone to charge to 50% in 20 minutes. It is available in China on Samsung's online store and JD.com. The price of the other variant is yet to revealed. Samsung Galaxy A8s specifications Samsung Galaxy A8s sports an Infinity-O display, which is a type of panel that has a punch-hole on the front to fit a front-facing camera. The punch-hole is on the top left corner of the 6.4-inch Full HD+ display, which offers 19.5:9 display aspect ratio. The phone is powered by an octa-core Qualcomm Snapdragon 710 processor coupled with Adreno 616 GPU. It runs on Android 8.1 Oreo with Samsung Experience UI 9.5 on top. In terms of optics, it comes equipped with a triple camera setup on the back. Samsung Galaxy A8s uses the same camera system as the Galaxy A9 2018. On the back panel, the Galaxy A8s features a 24MP primary ultra-wide sensor with f/1.7 aperture, a 10MP telephoto sensor and a 5MP depth sensor. Highlights: Honor View 20 might be announced in a special Maserati Edition The phone may launch in 6GB/64GB and 6GB/128GB variants The phone’s camera is reportedly capable of shooting 960fps videos The launch of the Honor View 20 is just around the corner but just a few days ahead of its December 26 launch event, some images and poster leaks have revealed a lot of information, including its price, a probable special edition of the phone and a camera feature. The images were posted on Chinese social media platform Weibo and the handset has also been spotted on Chinese etailer VMall. Honor View 20 Maserati Edition Chinese smartphone makers are aggressively tying-up with other brands and it seems Honor might be jumping the bandwagon as well. In an image on Weibo, the phone said to be the View 20 and it is seen sporting a “Maserati” branding on its back panel. It can be seen featuring a triple camera setup, an LED flash and Honor branding as well. A box is seen with “V20” and “Maserati” branding on it, suggesting that the company has partnered with the Italian automaker to launch a special edition of the handset. This comes after other phone manufacturers like OnePlus, Oppo and Huawei have launched their respective special edition phones after partnering with automobile manufacturers. Honor View 20 Leaked Pricing A poster of the View 20 has also leaked on weibo and it tips at the device's variants, prices, camera lens resolution and the “Link Turbo” feature. According to the poster, the device might come in two variants: one with 6GB RAM and 64GB storage, which could be priced at CNY 2799 (approx Rs 28,500). The other variant might sport 6GB RAM and 128GB storage and is seen with a price tag of CNY 3299 (approx Rs 33,500). The poster mentions 48 million AI ultra clear photography, suggesting a 48MP sensor and an AI-powered camera. The poster also suggests that the hanset will feature the ‘Link Turbo’ tech, which the company has detailed before. Honor says that it can assess network conditions to automatically switch between Wi-Fi or 4G networks. Honor’s Link Turbo tech is said to be capable of boosting download speeds by adopting Wi-Fi and 4G networks. It’s not clear whether both Wi-Fi and cellular networks are used simultaneously or not. The poster seems to be legit because the company announced the ‘Link Turbo’ tech when it unveiled the phone earlier this month in Hong Kong. However, the same cannot be said for the alleged pricing since the company is to announce it officially. Honor View 20 leaked camera specs Instead of a dual or a triple camera setup, the Honor View20 features a single 48MP rear AI camera which employs Sony's IMX586 sensor. Apart from this, nothing much about the camera was revealed. However, a leaked image on Weibo suggests that the camera is capable of taking 960fps videos as well. The Huawei P20 series was the first smartphone from the company to be able to record at this high a frame rate. As mentioned above, image of the Maserati Edition reveals a triple rear camera setup. So, it is possible that the regular variants might feature a single camera, while the special edition could come equipped with three rear shooters. Honor View 20 is also one of the first phones to come with a punch hole 25MP selfie camera. Key Highlights: Firefox Focus on Android updated with Enhanced Tracking Protection feature Google's Safe Browsing service has also been added iOS users of the app will be displayed search suggestions Mozilla is rolling out an update to its privacy-centric Firefox Focus browser for Android and iOS. Those who use the app on Android will now have more control over which websites they want to share their data with, along with another safety feature that will warn users when they are visiting a website that could be potentially dangerous. To enable a more private browsing experience, Firefox Focus now comes with Enhanced Tracking Protection feature, which was introduced with Firefox 63 update for the desktop. Using the feature, one will now have more control over their data that’s available for online platforms with the option to block all cookies on a website, all third-party cookies or cross-site trackers, which follow a user’s behaviour while browsing the web. Alongside Enhanced Tracking Protection, users will now be warned when they wander onto a shady website. This is thanks to the addition of Google's Safe Browsing service in the app, which checks URLs and if they are listed as unsafe, users will be alerted. “You may then either follow to safety, or ignore to continue navigating to the requested site,“ states Mozilla in its blog post. As mentioned above, the Firefox Focus has also been updated on iOS to display search suggestions. Users can activate the feature by navigating to the Search option in the browser’s settings and selecting the Get search suggestions option. Back in September this year, Mozilla launched a service called Firefox Monitor that goes through Have I Been Pwned’s (HIBP) database to tell a user if their email has been compromised. For providing this service, Firefox has teamed up with Troy Hunt, the creator of HIBP. Firefox Monitor will also enable users to subscribe to the service and receive notifications in case their email addresses are found in future leaks. When browsing the web using Firefox, users will also receive notifications when they visit a website that was breached in the past. Linux Mint is one of the easiest Linux distros to use out there, apart from popular ones like Ubuntu and Fedora. Its developers have released the newest version, Linux Mint 19.1 (codenamed Tessa). The new version will be supported until 2023. If you’re interested in giving the new version a whirl, head over to Linux Mint’s Download page and choose an edition and get going. The new version is based on Ubuntu 18.04 LTS (Long Term Support), which is supported until April 2023. It comes with a list of new features and improvements. They include a new workflow and new panels. There are twelve new themes to choose from. The default file manager, Nemo, is now updated to be faster than before. Users can configure it to show thumbnails and file creation date for supported file types. XApps get internal improvements. Language Settings and the Input Methods are now two separate applications. Read the complete changelog here. Linux Mint gets twelve new themes Linux Mint is currently available in three editions: Cinnamon, MATE, and Xfce. The first edition, Cinnamon, runs Cinnamon 4.0 desktop environment and is the most popular of the three. It has been developed specifically for Linux Mint. In Linux Mint’s words, it’s “the most modern, innovative and full-featured desktop”. Go with this if it’s the first time you’re installing Linux on your computer. MATE is a classic desktop environment based on GNOME 2. It was Linux Mint’s default desktop environment for five years in the 2000s. MATE is lighter, thus faster, and more stable. Choose this if you have used MATE before and like it. Xfce is an extremely lightweight desktop environment. It has fewer features than Cinnamon and MATE but is extremely light on system resources. Choose this edition if you have an old computer (with less than 1GB of RAM, that is). A notable Xfce equivalent in the Ubuntu world is Lubuntu. Linux Mint would have been offered in a fourth edition called KDE had support for the desktop environment not been killed off last year. If you’re not sure whether to download the 32-bit or the 64-bit version of Linux Mint, go with 64-bit. According to Linux Mint, if your computer was manufactured after 2007, there’s a good chance it sports a 64-bit processor. Come on then, Linux fans, go ahead and give the new version of Linux Mint a shot.Mumbai Comic Con 2018: What to expect

Highlights: Nokia 3 has started to receive the Android 8.1 Oreo update The update brings the December Android security patch This is the third major OS update for the smartphone Nokia 3 (2017) smartphones have now started getting the Android 8.1 Oreo update. The update brings along with it the December Android security patch. According to a screenshot of the changelog shared on nokiacamp.com, the update will also provide some “System Stability”. This could be disheartening for some because Android Pie 9.0 is the talk of the town but atleast HMD Global is delivering on its promise of updating the OS of the device. It could be said that the update is coming a bit late to the smartphone. The reason for this could be the lag in major updates for devices powered by Mediatek SoC. For those unaware, the Nokia 3 has MediaTek MT6737 chipset under the hood. That said, there could be other factors contributing to the delayed rollout of Android 8.1. If you have a Nokia 3 and it still hasn’t got an update, wait for some time as the rollout could be phased. The entry-level Nokia 3 was launched with Android Nougat 7.0. Eventually the Android Nougat 7.1.1 was rolled out to these devices. The company skipped the Android Nougat 7.1.2 update and directly jumped to the Android Oreo 8.0. This is essentially the third major software update for the phone. HMD Global had launched Nokia 3, Nokia 5 and Nokia 6 in India in June and Nokia 3 was the first smartphone to go on sale. The Nokia 3 sports a 5-inch 720p HD display and is powered by MediaTek MT6737 chipset. The handset offers 2GB RAM and 16GB expandable storage. There are 8MP front and rear cameras with f/2.0 aperture and 720p video recording. Nokia 3 supports dual-band Wi-Fi, Bluetooth 4.0, GPS, NFC, FM Radio and 3.5mm audio jack. The handset is backed by a 2630mAh battery and is available in silver, matte black, tempered blue and copper white colour options. Highlights: Xiaomi is dropping software support for Mi 5 and Redmi Note 3 These phones will receive the final MIUI Global stable update Custom ROMs by the Mi Community will still be available for these phone Xiaomi has confirmed that it is dropping the software support for two of its devices, the Xiaomi Mi 5 and Redmi Note 3. Both the smartphones were launched in 2016 and were included in almost every list of devices that had got various security and MIUI updates in last two years. The company, however, says that these phone will get the upcoming stable release of the MIUI Global ROM before their support ends for good. According to a report, the Beta Team for both phones will be disbanded after the upcoming final (over-the-air) OTA update arrives. Though it could be a sad news for users of these phones, from a business point of view, Xiaomi is apparently taking a positive step. The Chinese company has been releasing a plethora of smartphones now and the software support for all of them is costly as well as time-consuming. But there is a little need to be disheartened. There are plenty of ROMs based on the latest Android versions are available on the internet. You can flash the one you like to jazz up your phone. Recently, the Xiaomi Redmi 3S, Redmi 3S Prime and the Redmi 4 users started receiving the MIUI 10 Global stable update. The update is based on Android Oreo 8.1 Oreo and brings new features like a new UI, revamped systems apps and more. Xiaomi launched the MIUI 10 at the Redmi Y2's launch event in India in June. At the event, Xiaomi's Product Manager, Sudeep Sahu, explained some key features of the new ROM. Sahu said that with MIUI 10, the company’s focus has been on Speed, Design, Sound and AI Portrait image capturing. In terms of performance, MIUI 10 comes with two new features called “lock free critical path” and “co-dependent prioritising”, which are said to improve speed times of their devices by up to 10 percent.
